A Polish man living in Reading has set up a website forum to help his compatriots integrate into the local community.
Forum Polski Reading provides the town’s thriving Polish contingent with a place to chat, make new friends and find jobs and accommodation.
Members can discuss local issues, organise social events and upload and then share music, photos and videos.
The website even has an online trading section where people can buy and sell items, and a directory containing information on local services such as schools and hospitals.
This one-stop-shop has been created by 28-year-old Emil Olczak, who came up with the idea after moving to Reading in October 2006.
“When I first got here I didn’t now how things worked,” he said. “I didn’t know how to register with the Home Office, how to be legal, how to get a job, find a hospital or anything.
"I really needed somewhere I could go to find this information and get advice from Polish people who already lived in Reading.
“I guessed there were lots of others in Reading who were in the same situation as me, so I decided to set something up myself.”
More than 750 Poles have registered on the forum – which is written entirely in Polish – since it was launched early last year.
Mr Olczak said: “If you are Polish and you want to know what is going on in Reading, this is the place to be.
“People use it to chat to each other, and send posts on different topics. They talk about all sorts of things, and help one another out with jobs and places to live.
“We have members of all ages. We even have the priest from the Polish church, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ in Watlington Street, chatting on the forum.
“It is very popular. We get around 1,000 hits each day and more and more are joining each week.”
One of these is Karol Bajer, who moved to Reading last July. He said the forum helped him find a house in Oxford Road and secure work at Reading Moto service station on the M4.
“It’s great for Polish people who live in Reading,” he said. “When I came here I didn’t know anything about the area.
“A friend told me about the forum and it has helped me a lot. I made new friends and one of them got me a job and a better place to live.
“If I have any problems I can go on the website and tell others about it and they help me sort them out.”
The forum is another sign that the community of 7,000 Poles who have arrived in Reading over the past decade is settling into the town.
Billboards written in Polish now sit next to traditional English shops, and the town’s first Polish pub – Gospoda in Bedford Road – opened its doors earlier this month.
Mr Olczak, who monitors the site from his home in London Street, recognises this change and plans to branch out to help his fellow countrymen in other towns in Berkshire.
“Over the past few years more and more Polish people have come to live here. We have a good community here now and the forum helps us connect and stay together,” he said.
“People find it very useful and if it keeps growing, I will think about setting up similar ones in places like Bracknell and Slough.”"
